Nuria Rubio Guerra

May 30, 1933 — January 1, 2021

Nuria Rubio Guerra passed quietly on January 1, 2021 at age 87 at S.P.J.S.T. Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation in El Campo.  She was born in Santiago de Cuba on May 30, 1933 and is the daughter of late Manual and Maria del Carmen Portilla Rubio.

Nuria enjoyed a wonderful and eventful youth in Cuba surrounded by her three sisters and a brother.  She graduated from Escuela del Hogar “Oriente” in Santiago de Cuba where she studied to be a primary school teacher.  On July 31, 1955 she married the love of her life the late, Julio Guerra.  While in Cuba, their first children, Julio III and Nuria were born.  In 1962, they immigrated from Cuba to the United States as refugees from Communism. They lived in Amarillo, Texas where Julio attended West Texas University and obtained his Masters degree.  They moved to Wharton, Texas in 1968 where Julio was a Spanish teacher with the Wharton County Junior College.  Their third and last child, Teresa, was born in Wharton.

Nuria was a primary school teacher in the Cuban public schools before arriving to the United States.  After moving to Wharton she worked as a teacher for the Head Start program at Alabama Street School.  Later, she worked at No Nam Boutique where she greeted and assisted customers and became a friendly face for 19 years.  She was generous with her time and was a volunteer at Gulf Coast Medical Center.  Nuria was also a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton.  She lived in Wharton for 51 years.  She loved children and enjoyed baking, gardening, reading, and spending time with family and friends.  Her delicious meals and wonderful desserts such as flan and her famous rum cake will always be remembered.  She was a devoted and loving wife to her husband of 53 years, Julio, whom she cared for during an extended illness.

A private Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton and Rite of Committal at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery, with Rev.  Samuel Appiasi officiating.
