Maria Ignacia Gaona July 31st 1936 ~ December 11th 2022 Maria Ignacia Gaona, age 86, of Wharton, passed away Sunday, December 11, 2022 in a Houston hospital following a brief illness. She was born July 31, 1936 in Cuero to the late Eugenio and Petra Cisneros Cruz. Maria was a raised in the Cresent area and attended Cresent schools. She married Gumesindo Gaona on April 27, 1953. He preceded her in death after 65 years of marriage in 2018. Maria enjoyed watching baseball, going to garage sales, ironing and sewing, and visiting with family and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Alfredo, daughter, Carolina, grandson, Nick Perez, brothers, Armando Frank, Eugenio, Jr., and Nasario Cruz and sister, Julia Salcido. Maria is survived by her children, Mary Helen Robles and husband, Victor of Victoria, Irma Gaona of Rosenberg, Alicia Gaona of Wharton, and Patricia Gaona and husband, Charles Emmons of Needville, Pedro Gaona and wife, Iliana of Victoria, Rick Gaona and wife, Elvira of Laredo, Ruben Gaona and wife, Irma of Wharton, Oscar Gaona of Port Lavaca, and Jimmy Gaona of Wharton, sisters, Mary Ellen , Betty Cortez and Oralia Cruz, brothers, Fernando Cruz, Rbert Cruz and Joe Cruz, along with 21 grandchildren, 21 Great Grandchildren and 20 great great grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Friday, December 16, 2022 after 5pm at the Chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with a rosary recited at 7pm. Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2022 at 11 am at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Wharton with Fr. Antonio Perez. Burial will be in La Colonial Cemetery in El Campo.
