Maria Teresa Callejas

Maria Teresa Callejas, 78, of Wharton, passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her family, on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. She was born on October 3, 1947, in El Salvador to the late Jesús Callejas and María Antonia Hernández Callejas.

Maria was an incomparable soul—a woman of great strength, deep tenderness, and unwavering spirit. She cherished the simple joys of country life and had a special bond with nature, finding peace and happiness in caring for the animals on her farm. Known for her beautiful singing voice, Maria often filled her home with melodies that brought comfort and joy to all who heard her.

She was also a gifted cook, lovingly preparing tamales and baking homemade bread that became the heart of family gatherings. Her kitchen was a place where love was expressed, stories were shared, and family was always brought together. Maria was preceded in death by her beloved son, Francisco Torres.

She is survived by her loving husband, José Marinero of Wharton; her daughters, Reina Bonilla and husband Ignacio of Wharton, and Ana Miriam Torres; her sons, Adolfo Torres and wife María Guadalupe of Florida, and Juan Carlos Torres, Sr. and wife Mirna of Wharton; her grandchildren, Silvia Henriquez, Nancy Henriquez, Daniel Mejia, Alberto Torres, María Teresa Torres, Luis Torres, Alberto Jesús Torres, Diego Palomo, and Carlos Torres, Jr.; her great-grandchildren, Bianca Benites, Juan Benites, Aurora Ruiz, Alejandro Ruiz, Avi Ruiz, Kai Sabino, Angel Sabino, Emma Torres, and Sophia Torres; her sisters, Carmen, Adela, Catalina, Eloisa, Isabel, and Lidia Callejas; her brothers, Pedro and Benigno Callejas; along with many nieces, nephews, and close family friends.

Visitation will be held on Monday, January 26, 2026, beginning at 5:00 p.m. at Wharton Funeral Home, with a Rosary recited at 6:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 514 Carlisle St., Rosenberg, TX 77471, with Father Lee officiating. A Rite of Committal and Burial will follow at Davis Greenlawn Cemetery in 3900 B.F. Terry Blvd., Rosenberg, TX 77471, accompanied by Mariachi in her honor. Pallbearers will be announced.

Rest in peace, Maria. Your spirit will continue to sing within us, and your love will live on through the family you built and the example you left behind.

María Teresa Callejas, de 78 años, residente de Wharton, falleció en paz en su hogar, rodeada de su familia, el martes 20 de enero de 2026. Nació el 3 de Octubre de 1947 en El Salvador, hija de los difuntos Jesús Callejas y María Antonia Hernández Callejas.

María fue una persona incomparable—una mujer de gran fortaleza, profunda ternura y espíritu inquebrantable. Amaba la vida sencilla, su alegría fue la vida campestre y tenía un vínculo especial con la naturaleza, encontrando paz y felicidad al cuidar los animales de su granja. Era conocida por su hermosa voz, que a menudo llenaba su hogar de cantos que brindaban consuelo y alegría a todos los que la escuchaban.

También fue una cocinera excepcional, famosa por sus tamales y su pan quesadilla Salvadoreña, que se convirtieron en el centro de las reuniones familiares. Su cocina era un lugar de amor, donde se compartían historias y la familia siempre se reunía.

El velorio se llevará a cabo el lunes 26 de enero de 2026, a partir de las 5:00 p.m., en la Funeraria Wharton Funeral Home, donde se rezará el Rosario a las 6:00 p.m. La Misa Funebre se celebrará el martes 27 de enero de 2026 a las 10:00 a.m. en la Iglesia Católica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, ubicada en 514 Carlisle St., Rosenberg, TX 77471, oficiada por el Padre Lee. El rito de sepelio y entierro se llevará a cabo posteriormente en el Cementerio Davis Greenlawn, ubicado en 3900 B.F. Terry Blvd., Rosenberg, TX 77471, acompañado por mariachi en su honor.
