Wharton, TX

Margaret Adella Zahn, 87, of Wharton, Texas passed away peacefully on November 6, 2025, at a Wharton Nursing Center following a lengthy illness. She was born in Wharton, Texas on October 22, 1938, to the late Anton Zahn Jr. and Frances Pilcik Zahn.

Margaret was raised and lived most of her life in Hungerford, Texas. She graduated from East Bernard High School in 1958 and was an outstanding volleyball player. After graduating from High School, she began her career working and serving Wharton County at the Court House in the Tax Collector Assessor Office. She retired after over 50 years of service as Deputy Tax Collector Assessor. She served with many elected Tax Collector Assessor's over the years and trained many new employees. She was well-liked, loved, and respected among her colleagues in the office. She was an efficient employee and knew the workings of the Tax Office backwards and forward. People would come to her with all of their questions. An additional duty was serving as the Voter Registration Officer for many years.

Margaret's second full-time job was serving as the Secretary of St. John's Catholic Church in Hungerford, Texas and its mission St. Wenceslaus in Beasley, Texas. She worked for numerous Pastors over 35 years, the longest with the late Rev. Henry Rachunek. She helped with all of the bookkeeping activities, preparing the weekly bulletin, and helping with weddings, funerals, and baptisms. She also led the choir at St. John's Church and St. Wenceslaus Church for many years. Margaret was a member of the Catholic Daughters, the St. John's Altar Society, and the Wharton Pilot Club. She was always willing to help with fundraisers and festivals, and when she could no longer physically participate, she would be on the phone getting support anyway she could.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Raymond Zahn and Ludy Zahn and her sisters, Vlasta Zahn Krenek and Martha Zahn O'Dowd. Also, preceding her in death were two brothers-in-law, George Krenek Jr. and John E. O'Dowd Jr. and a niece Elizabeth Krenek Koch.

Margaret is survived by her sisters-in-laws, Elsie Eggemeyer Zahn and Agnes Sulak Zahn, nieces and nephews, Mary Lou Krenek, Richard Koch, Tim Krenek and wife Phyllis, Gerard Krenek and wife Theresa, Mark Krenek, Thomas Zahn and wife Jan, Agnes O'Dowd Faucheux, John Kevin O'Dowd, Sue O'Dowd Baudry, Richard Zahn and wife Susan, and David Zahn and wife Michelle. Also surviving her are many great nieces and nephews and now great-great nieces and nephews are being added to her large family. She loved all of them with all of her heart. She tried to remember everyone on their birthdays, at Christmas, at Easter, and at all other special occasions. Our "Aunt Ninnie" will be missed.

The family would like to thank the employees at the Wharton Nursing Home and Convalescent Center for their care and friendship during her years of residence. A special thank you goes to her nephew, Richard Koch, for his faithfulness and his care for her during her years in the nursing home. We also thank all of her friends who came to visit her.

Visitation will be after 9am Monday, November 10, 2025, at St. John's Catholic Church in Hungerford, Texas with Rosary recited at 10:30am. The funeral Mass is set to begin at 11am with Rev. Charles Dwomoh officiating. Burial will follow at St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Hungerford by her parents.
