Julie Ellen Weir

Julie Ellen Weir, age 82, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2025, surrounded by her family in Houston, Texas. Julie was born on October 10, 1942, to Ruth and Glen Bagwell in Morgantown, West Virginia. She was raised in Barrett, West Virginia and graduated from Van High School in 1960.

Julie was a summer counselor at Camp Thomas E. Lightfoot, a camp for coal miners’ children, where she met her husband, Don Weir. The two were married on September 8, 1962, while both were attending West Virginia University. Julie graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1964. Don’s Army ROTC commitment led them to Ft. Bliss in El Paso, Texas, where their first daughter, Lara, was born. After their military service concluded, they moved to Houston, Texas, where their second daughter, Lisa, and their son, Eric, were born.

Julie and Don (or “D.V.”, as only Julie called him) quickly became integral parts of their community in Houston. Julie’s friendly and infectious personality quickly endeared her to all, while her helping spirit, dedication and hard work created lasting friendships. Julie was a teacher at heart and had a successful teaching career at the Chapelwood School for Young Children, where she founded the Bridge program, and then at The Village School.

Julie and Don joined Houston’s First Baptist in 1978, where she served faithfully and joyfully. She became a member of their renowned choir, participating in many Christmas pageants and mission trips. Julie taught a Bible study class in the youth group, and later in a women’s class. She was a member of the Dayspring class and volunteered for many years with Living Proof Ministries.

Julie was the heartbeat of the family and a steadfast source of strength, consistency and joy. Being a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother brought her tremendous happiness. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren regularly, traveling with them, having sleepovers, a lot of “high tea”, and attending countless sporting events. She also enjoyed collecting antiques and gardening. Her fingerprints are evident in our homes, as well as in our hearts and lives. Julie’s legacy of faith and love has already reached three generations, and it will be carried on for many more.

Julie is predeceased by her parents, Ruth and Glen Bagwell, and her sister, Carolyn Busch.

Julie is survived by her husband of 62 years, Donald Vernon Weir, her children: Lara Tate (Paul), Lisa Weir, and Eric Weir (Shannon), her seven grandchildren: Kendall Tate, Courtney Taff (Carson), Claire Tate, Kelly Tate, Reece Weir, Kate Weir and Luke Weir, her two great-grandchildren: Mckinley Taff and Caleb Taff, and her sister, Linda Lange (Ed), of Waynesboro, Virginia.

The family sincerely appreciates the love and kindness generously shared by countless friends, thoughtful neighbors and supportive caregivers.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, August 22, 2025, at 11:00 am in the chapel of Houston’s First Baptist Church, with a reception to immediately follow.

The church is located at 7401 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas.
