Johnnie Svatek

September 4, 1932 — August 6, 2021

Johnnie Daniel Svatek, 88, of Wharton, TX died peacefully in his sleep on August 6, 2021. Johnnie was born on September 4, 1932 in Shiner, TX to John and Angeline Hajek Svatek.

Johnnie loved providing for his family working tirelessly from a beginner beer route salesman up to eventually owning a Miller beer distributorship for 28 years. His successful career allowed him to purchase his ranch in Edna, TX, which was his “happy” place. He especially enjoyed his times out there with his grandson teaching him everything he knew about hunting. His favorite title was “Papa” and loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and was always supportive of all their endeavors, and encouraged them to excel in everything they pursue.

Johnnie was a devout Catholic and a member of Holy Family Church and practiced his faith everyday through prayer and rosary. He was a member of the Catholic fraternities of Knights of Columbus and KJT. Johnnie also served in the US Army during the Korean War and upon return joined the American Legion. He also was a lifetime (retired) member of the Wharton Volunteer Fire Department.

Johnnie will be remembered for being “Mr. Fix-it” for his entire family, tackling any and all projects large and small. He was always asking if anything was broken. One of his most enjoyable hobbies was mowing grass, whether it was his own, out at the ranch or at his daughter’s house (which she will miss dearly!). In his later years, he really enjoyed relaxing at home in his recliner watching TV Land.

The whole family is so appreciative of the care that his daughter, Donna, provided him over these past few years.

Johnnie was preceded in death by his loving wife, Dolores, to whom he was married for 60 years.  Also preceding him was his parents, brothers Jimmy Svatek, Benjamin Svatek, Tony Svatek, Laddie Svatek, and Jody Svatek and sisters Henrietta Barta and Agnes Labay.

He is survived by son Johnnie Ray Svatek and wife Linda, and daughters Sandra Svatek and Donna Svatek, grandchildren Heather Kalina and husband Clint, and Clay Svatek and wife Jacque, along with great grand-children Taylor Grace Kalina (12), Regan Faith Kalina (9), Chance Matthew Kalina (7), Kynlee Marie Svatek (6), Emilee Rae Svatek (4) and Aubree Lynn Svatek (18 months).  In addition, brothers George Svatek, Billy Svatek, David Svatek and Tommy Svatek and sisters Janice Toman and Bernadette Toman.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 10th, at Wharton Funeral Home starting at 5:00 p.m. with Rosary at 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 11th at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev.
