Gilbert Carbajal, a dedicated and warmhearted man, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2026, at a nursing home in Wharton, Texas. Born on September 21, 1946, in New Gulf, TX, Gilbert lived a life marked by hard work, devotion to family, and simple joys that enriched his days.
He spent a significant part of his career working as a heavy equipment operator for the city of Sweeny. His commitment and skill in his profession were reflections of a man who valued diligence and responsibility. Beyond his work, Gilbert found happiness in activities that connected him with nature and family. He loved bank fishing, engaging in friendly games of pool, hunting, and most tenderly, spending time with his beloved grandchildren.
Gilbert’s family was his greatest treasure. He is survived by his devoted daughter Leslie Espinosa and her husband Alex of Wharton, and his other daughter Jennifer Morris and her husband Billy of Sweeny. He also cherished his stepdaughter Angela Martinez and her husband Cesar of Needville, along with his son Cory Carbajal of El Campo, and stepson Billy Burrows of West Colombia. His sisters Irene Ruegger and her husband Robert, Linda Lopez, Iris Rice and her husband Jim, and Sylvia Geisler carry forward his memory with love and respect.
His legacy also lives on through a vibrant extended family including grandsons William Hernandez, Carlos Hernandez Jr., Trey Espinosa, Joseph Hernandez, Fabian Burrows, Billy Burrows Jr., Angel Burrows, and Frankie Burrows, as well as granddaughter Brianna Burrows. The joy he found in his family is further echoed in his eleven great-grandchildren, each a living testament to his enduring influence and love.
Gilbert was preceded in death by his father William Rubio Carbajal, mother Irene Campos Carbajal, his cherished wife Maria Hernandez, and his son William Carbajal. He also mourned the loss of his brothers Luis Carbajal and Alvino Carbajal, who shared in his journey through life.
The community and family will gather to honor Gilbert’s memory at Wharton Funeral Home, located at 515 E Boling Hwy, Wharton, TX 77488. The viewing will take place on April 4, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, followed by the funeral service from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM on the same day. This time will allow all who knew him to pay respects and reflect on a life well-lived.Gilbert Carbajal’s story is one of steadfast dedication, heartfelt connections, and joyful moments spent in the companionship of those he loved most. His enduring spirit will continue to inspire all who had the honor to know him.
