Gary Louis Chumchal

Gary Chumchal, 65, of Pleak, Texas took the Lord’s hand on Tuesday, January 28, 2020 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on March 3, 1954 to the late Albert and Georgene Labay Chumchal.

Gary was born and raised in the Wharton area where he spent most of his youth working on the family farm in Hungerford.  He was a graduate of Wharton High School. On December 30, 1971 he married the love of his life, Dotty Viktorin, in Hungerford, Texas.

Gary and Dotty settled in Pleak, Texas where they raised their three wonderful children. He loved to spend his free time hunting, fishing, tending to cattle and working on various projects. His most favorite times were spent with his wife, children and grandchildren. His precious grandchildren meant the world to him and kept him very occupied.

He was well known by his family and friends for his mechanical skills and ability to fix anything with a motor. He enjoyed classic cars and trucks. He was even able to tell the year of most by looking at the head lights or tail lights.

Gary had an incredible work ethic. He worked as a machinist in the oil and gas industry for 44 years where he was able to make a career and pass his knowledge along to others.

Gary is survived by his wife of 48 years, Dotty Chumchal, daughter Misty Sherrill and her husband, Todd of Needville, sons, James Chumchal of Ganado, and Phillip Chumchal and wife, Jennifer of Needville, grandchildren, Tori Chumchal, Maci Chumchal, Addyson Sherrill, Brayden Sherrill, Cassidy Sherrill, Kayleigh Chumchal, Justin Zwahr, Jacob Zwahr and his two brothers and their spouses.

Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm Monday, February 3, 2020 with a rosary recited at 2:00 pm and the Funeral services beginning at 2:30 pm all at Wharton Funeral Home with Fr Bob Knippenberg officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.
