Alfonso J.” Kino” Cruz Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on July 3, 2026, at the age of 76. Born on May 26, 1950, in El Campo, Texas, to the late Alfonso Cruz, Sr. and Maria Inez Bernal Cruz.
He spent his life in Wharton, Texas, where he became a respected welder at Hudson Industries, honing his skills over the years and earning the admiration of colleagues and friends alike.
Kino had a passion for life that was reflected in everything he did. In his youth, he was an avid baseball player, often playing at the fields next to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, where he also spent countless hours attending Mass. A devoted Houston Astros and Dallas Cowboys fan, he delighted in sharing his love of sports with his family.
Above all, Kino cherished the time spent with his family. He loved taking trips with his daughter, Khrystine, and created countless joyful memories with his sons, Michael and Anthony. His spirit for fun was contagious; he loved dancing and hosting gatherings, where his culinary talents shined—particularly when he was crowned Bar-B-Que Champion at a local cook-off. These moments of laughter and togetherness were the highlights of his life. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his grandson, Eric Cruz and sister, Delia Anzaldua.
Alfonso is survived by his loving spouse, Rebecca Cruz of Wharton, his daughter Khrystine Cruz of Wharton, sons Michael Cruz and wife, Theresa of Wildomar, CA and Anthony Cruz and wife, Esha of Pasadena, TX; grandchildren, Christian, Diego, Juan Diego, Antonio, Carlos and Natalia; sisters, Rosie Cruz and Cynthia Cruz; brothers, Danny Cruz and Arthur “Tutti” Cruz. He also leaves behind a legacy of love and memories that will forever be cherished by his family.
Visitation will be on Monday July 20, 2026 at 8:30 a.m., followed by a rosary service at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Mt Carmel Catholic Church. A Mass celebrating his life will commence at 11:00 a.m. with Father Antonio Perez officiating.
Rest in peace, Alfonso. Your legacy of love and laughter will live on in the hearts of those you touched.
Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home. Condolences may be left at whartonfuneralhome.com.
