Merrill Caldwell

Merrill Hudgins Caldwell Mrs. Merrill Hudgins Caldwell, age 91 of Hungerford died early Wednesday morning, May 23, 2012 at her home following an extended illness. She was born on January 7, 1921 in Hungerford the daughter of the late Carlton Hudgins and Dora Wilbeck Hudgins. Mrs. Caldwell was a long-time resident of Wharton and a member of the First Baptist Church of Wharton. She was a graduate of Wharton High School. She married H. Q. (John) Caldwell on October 19, 1940 in Wharton and he preceded her in death on December 29, 1995. She was also preceded in death by a son, Ronald Caldwell 2010 and brothers, Clay Hudgins, Arthur B. Hudgins and Kenneth Hudgins. She worked as a secretary for the Wharton County Library and then worked as a secretary for Houston Natural Gas (Entex) for over twenty five years until her retirement. She loved working in her yard, spending time with her family, especially her granddaughter, going to Sunday school classes and she also loved all of her animals. Funeral services were held at 2:00 pm Friday, May 25, 2012 at the chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home with Mr. Paul Jones officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton. Survivors include her son Dr. Larry Caldwell and wife Teena; brother and sister-in-law, Tom & Rosette Hudgins of Wharton and granddaughter Lauren Caldwell. Pallbearers were Tim Barker, Wayne Adam, Carlton Hudgins, Dick Hudgins, Dan Kirklighter and Clark Wilbeck. In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to AMED Hospice or First Baptist Church, 507 N. Fulton, Wharton, TX 77488. Funeral services are under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.
